Head Start & Early Head Start
Overview Southwestern Community Action Council has provided continuous quality early child hood services since 1965.
In 1968 we received a Parent Child Center Grant to provide services to infant, toddlers, children up to three years of age and their families. This grant was funded until 1998 at which time we were awarded a grant for the Early Head Start Program.
Our goal for Head Start/Early Head Start is to continue to provide comprehensive child development services to economically disadvantaged children and families, with a special focus on helping preschoolers develop the early reading and math skills they need to be successful in school. We work collaboratively with our local Boards of Education to provide quality Pre-k services.
Southwestern Head Start programs promote school readiness by enhancing the social and cognitive development of children through the provision of educational, health, nutritional, social and other services to enrolled children and families. They engage parents in their children's learning and help them in making progress toward their educational, literacy and employment goals. Significant emphasis is placed on the involvement of parents in the administration of local Head Start programs.
Early Head Start currently offers locally designed options at a Correctional Facility and in two high schools in Cabell County. We also offer home-based services and center based services.
